Singapore Math — see it, understand it, solve it

Singapore Math helps children understand how numbers work, recognise patterns and explain their thinking. Children explore mathematical ideas step by step, building understanding through practical activities, pictures and calculations.

How does the method work?

The approach follows three connected stages: Concrete → Pictorial → Abstract. In simple words: use objects → draw it → work with numbers.

  1. Concrete — explore with objects.
Children use counters, blocks and other everyday objects to explore quantities and mathematical relationships.
  2. Pictorial — make the idea visible.
Pictures, number bonds and bar models help children represent what they have explored and understand how the parts of a problem fit together.
  3. Abstract — connect understanding to numbers.
Children use numbers and mathematical symbols to describe and solve the same problem.

A simple example: 8 + 5

With counters, a child discovers that moving two counters from the group of five to the group of eight makes ten, with three left over.

A drawing shows the same idea: split five into two and three, then combine eight and two.

8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3 = 10 + 3 = 13

What do children practise?

  • Understanding how numbers can be split and combined.
  • Choosing useful strategies for mental calculations.
  • Using pictures and bar models to explore word problems.
  • Explaining their solutions and checking their answers.

The aim is for children to understand why a solution works and use that understanding when they meet a new problem.
